A consultant is a person in a position with the ability to influence others; an individual, group, or organization; but lacks direct authority to make changes or implement programs. Every time you are asked to give advice with no direct control over the resources or actions, yet you want people to listen and heed your advice, you are acting as a consultant. Every time you give advice to someone who is in the position to make a decision, you are consulting. The moment a consultant has direct line control, they are acting as a manager. Many “staff” positions are consulting roles as they perform functions such as planning, recommending, assisting, and advising.
The primary role of a consultant, whether internal or external to the organization, is to engage in successful interventions. The foundation for consulting skills is to possess expertise desired by the client. Effectiveness as a consultant comes from being able to listen actively, problem-solve and generate options and potential solutions, provide support, disagree when necessary, and possess good interpersonal skills.
The act of consulting can last for months, years, or just a few minutes. The objective of this course is to take you through the consultative process to identify key phases, skills, obstacles, challenges, and tools for successful interventions. Whether you are an external consultant offering your expertise to industry giants, government agencies, and start-ups or a member of an organization where your expertise is needed to run a successful business, this course is designed to help you provide flawless consulting. According to Peter Block in his book Flawless Consulting, the consultant has three basic goals: 1) Establish a collaborative relationship with the client, 2) to help solve problems and teach others to solve problems so they stay solved, and 3) ensure attention is given to both the technical/business side of the problem as well as the people/process side.
